Doune Castle is unusual, chiefly because it is known to have been a stronghold site since Roman times. The castle as it currently stands is believed to have been partially complete by 1381.
It saw much bloodshed during the 17th and 18th centuries, after which it was largely abandoned.
Because Doune Castle is so well preserved, it is famous as a filming location and has appeared in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Game of Thrones and Outlander.
This richly illustrated guide is a fascinating read for history lovers and film buffs alike.
